Local legend has it that the eels in the main fountain of Chellah can sense (or grant, whichever) fertility. The tradition goes that the elderly lady who tends to the fountain and a nearby flock of chickens, throws egg whites into the fountain and if the eels swim up to eat them, the women nearby either are pregnant or will soon become pregnant. Fortunately, my group saw very few eels.
